Sled Pushes Straight Arms vs Bent Arms

Arms straight is beneficial for acceleration simply due to the bigger stride length.

Arms bent gives you better leverage from a more tight, compact position allowing you to push heavier loads due to a shorter stride/range of motion, giving you a mechanical advantage.

Yes it’s possible to push heavy loads with arms straight, but the key is to maintain a neutral spine, most people end up dropping their neck and rounding their back to use their bodyweight as an advantage to push.

Key Takeaways:

  • Aways maintain a neutral spine
  • Arms straight is better for acceleration/speed
  • Bent arms is better for heavy loads

Check out this note we got from one of our ten year clients! This guy is SUPER active. His extracurriculars include skiing, biking and adventuring with his two active dogs.

This client is retired and has been for many years, but through many working years and now through retirement he has stayed consistent in his strength training.

This client trained with us leading up to each one of these surgeries and strength training was an essential part of his post rehab recovery.

Tips to Take Care of YOU with Crazy Schedule

Kids are back in school and now that means..

  • Sports
  • Late nights
  • Homework
  • Events
  • Your health (gym. nutrition, appointments, etc)
  • Your actual job
  • Housework

Just all became really overwhelming.

I am living it with you! This month I had a TON of clients talk to me about how overwhelmed they are with all of it and I am here to talk you off the ledge and hopefully share some tips and tricks to make it a little less chaotic.

I am a single mom with three kids in two different schools and two different sports on the same days in two different locations. When I tell you I know, trust me....I know. I get it and the key to it all is always PLANNING, but hear me out...

First step..

  • If you don't have a white board with a weekly calendar on your fridge, then I highly recommend it. Get into the habit of updating it every Sunday so you can PLAN your week (see example below)

Chances are, you have a phone calendar that you use. Having it in front of you and everyone else will create more conversation and reminders, thus helping you PLAN better for the upcoming days.

Step 2

  • Make a list of what you need to have with you for the day. I do this on a piece of paper. It is not always super neat, but it helps me to organized and remember! Below is an example...I have 3 children 7 and under. With one football practice from 5-6pm at field 10 min away from where the other one practices at 6:15!

Step 3

  • For my situation, my girls eat picnic blanket style at the field while my son plays. Then him and I eat dinner while the other practices. Boom.
  • But here is the magic....because we don't get home until almost 8pm. Now I have 3 kids who need to get to bed for school the next day, but they also need to shower... At this age, I still need to do most things for them, right? Get their clothes out, help brush their teeth, help with showers, make lunches, etc, etc.
  • BEFORE LEAVING FOR PRACTICE
    • Get their PJS out
    • Line their toothbrushes up
    • Get towels in line
  • So it is truly an assembly line once they get home! They have already eaten and so have you, now it is GO time! If your kids are competitive then lean into that and make it a game. Set a timer and see how long it takes and try to beat it night after night.

Step 4

  • Now they're in bed, how can you make your life easier in the morning when you still have to adult...
    • Throw laundry in
    • Lay their clothes out with socks and everything
    • Line up their toothbrushes yet again
    • Make lunches
    • Fill water bottles
    • Get YOUR meals ready as needed
    • Lay YOUR gym clothes out or pack as needed
    • Know what you are having for breakfast and what you might be offering kiddos. Have is ready and accessible.
    • Switch laundry over
    • Dishes as needed
    • Bed

This does not apply to parents with older kids, but last week I had A LOT of conversations  with parents who  were feeling overwhelmed. Systems are EVERYTHING, organization and planning are key components to getting your feed underneath you and feeling successful and stress free.

If you have a partner to help you with these things then normalize talking about it! Use a different color marker on your marker board to customize who is responsible for what or bringing who where.

Check out the video below to see it all in action to include what I eat in a day and how this all plays out in real time.

Delicious Easy Breakfast Idea

Breakfast salad, an oldie, but a goodie!

You will want to add this one to your next meal plan. It keeps very well and it is served cold.

  • 3 hardboiled eggs
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 2 TBS diced red onion
  • 6 sliced cherry tomatoes

Mix together and chill! I made this batch on Sunday and and look how fresh it still looks (and tastes) on Monday morning.

**Add Jones Turkey Sausage for added protein!

Don’t Work Your Life Away

I’ve said it 100 times and I’ll continue to shout it from the rooftops…

Strength training is crucial to living your actual best life. Fat loss is an added bonus, but not the sole reason to start! Bonnie shared an incredible story below about her trip to South Africa and Northern Europe. Bonnie is retired and is finally enjoying life and doing the things she waited so long to do! You have to read it for yourself below!

Don’t work your entire life just to retire an unhealthy human. Life is too short and the best years that you’re working so hard to earn are yet to come. Take care of you now so that when you retire you can LIVE!

Unique & Powerful Testimonial

This weekend a client posted a heartfelt testimonial on our private client Facebook page. It was so powerful that I have to share it with you all in hopes that this speaks to someone else who may be feeling a bit lost or hopeless in their fitness journey.

It was too long to screenshot so I am going to write out her words below...

"I do not do this ever, but I also have to add my two cents about this gym. I am a full time caregiver for my husband who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's at an early age.

I joined the gym in March of this year. My goal for the month of August was to get to my the gym three times per week. I unfortunately failed that this week due to primary care and specialist appointments this week, BUT, my results from these appointments were incredible.

My numbers, my ultrasound test and other tests all showed improvement. One specialist even said, "I am not sure what you have been doing, but keep it up" and told me my test result looked so good that I do not need to return for two years. I sit here beyond words. I truly feel that it is the gym, Meagan, Tyler, Dylan and Ashley that have helped me get to this place in my life where my good health is important in order to take care of my husband. And I cannot forget to mention the nice people I have met along the way. Thank you, Yvette"

It is hard to take care of another human. Whether that be a spouse, a parent, a child or another loved one. It is hard. It is hard to find time and energy, but Yvette has done that and she has done it consistently since March. The "little things" all add up to BIG things when you keep going.

If you need help getting back into it, you know where to find us!

Test Your Health in 10 Seconds

New York Times put out a fantastic article last year about balance and how it relates to longevity and health.

When I shared it last year it was very popular and eye opening for many. Our clients were thrilled to pass it with flying colors and it certainly got them thinking about their loved ones a bit more as they weren't sure if their friends and family could pass it.

See, when your fit and healthy, you often take for granted or don't think twice about what you can still do with ease. It's when your health gets away from you where many start to fear things like going on vacations with spontaneous excursions or even getting up and down off of the floor. Don't pair exercise with just fat loss. That is truly a happy side effect of what strength training does for you.

You can read the article here or you can view the highlights here in this quick video I did last year in regards to the article....caution: I was a bit "passionate" and excited about the subject 🙂
