Evelyn is Shining Bright
If you asked me to list reasons why I absolutely adore Evelyn I could truly go on and on. This woman is the life of the party. You cannot possibly have a bad day when Evelyn is in the room. She brightens the room with her smile and her humor fills the room with laughs and joy. I am thrilled to have her at the 6:45 class. We are definitely the lucky ones. Her willingness to be coached, have fun and lend a helping hand is admirable. Here is what she has to say...
First let me say how humbled I am that I was picked to be the spotlight. I started my journey with Get Fit in December of 2016. When I joined I was looking to help improve my strength and help tone my body. I have lost over a hundred pounds since 2012 yet I had only really focused on cardio and portion control of my meals. Once joining Get Fit I immediately felt the changes in my muscles. Not just because I felt sore after every workout, it was a good sore, it was a sore that you knew change was happening. I could see the definition and shape taking place in muscles I didn't know existed!! Not only was I seeing the changes but I was feeling them too. I feel stronger, and I have better balance. The group training has been great it keeps it fun! When your having fun, time flies by! Having people at all different fitness levels makes me feel so comfortable and not afraid to make the modifications that I need for any injuries that I have. The color band system is great, I love knowing that I'm pushed on exercises that I can be pushed and challenged on, and then watched and modified on those exercises that I shouldn't be pushing myself due to injury or other restrictions. I feel like all the coaches really take an interest in each and every student to know what's going on with them and make sure that everybody exercises safely. I also love the family like atmosphere. I may not know everyone's name ( I'm trying to! ) but it doesn't change the fact that we're all supportive and help one another through every class!I really am happy that I stumbled across this gym on Facebook. Ironically enough once I got there I found lots of people I know and are even related to that go there as well!! Personally I would recommend this gym to anyone and everyone because it doesn't matter if you're young, old, fit or unfit they will make the class fit you!! Thank you to all my 6:45pm class peeps, and Coaches Adam, Cari and Meagan for all your support and awesomeness! On 3.... 1,2,3. MAKE IT HAPPEN! ! WOO HOO! !?
You can feel her enthusiasm in her post above, can't you? I am grateful to have Evelyn train with us at 6:45. She brightens my day and those around her!
Keep making it happen,
A Unique and Special Spotlight
This spotlight is SUCH a cool story! I can’t say I have ever heard a story quite so unique. Katie Lyon-Pingree is shining away and we are BEYOND proud of this cool story. Katie is a harpist. I knew this about Katie from the start, but I never could have guessed what training at Get Fit NH could have done for her special talent. Check out the note we got from Katie a few weeks ago.
I just wanted to say a HUGE THANK YOU to you all! As you may (or may not) know, I have been subbing down in Boston with the Ballet Orchestra for the past 2 years. This past June, they held their audition for the position of principal harpist and I WON!
My time thus far at Get Fit played an integral role in “making that happen”. What I have learned in a relatively short time from y’all is how to do hard things and not give up. This audition for me I consider the 2nd hardest thing I’ve ever done (2nd only to childbirth). It took all of my mental, emotional, and physical abilities to win. I know for sure that my “practicing” of doing that which is difficult on a PHYSICAL level helped tremendously with that.
This email can’t quite capture the magnanimity of what has shifted in me with your support. So thank you!
This note will forever touch my heart on so many levels. Katie has it right. Training is about so much more than changing your body. It is about training your mind too and teaching yourself that you CAN do hard things and not give up. Katie has simply wow’d us recently. She used to come to the 8:30 ladies training and then out of no where she came to 5 AM one day. Now she is faithful to 5 AM. She gets in, gets it done and gets on with her day. The change we have seen in Katie is so special and she deserves a HUGE high five!
Keep making it happen, Katie!
The Spotlight is Shining on Brenda Schmieder!
Brenda earned her way in to the spotlight, because she came to Get Fit NH and went all in! She took our coaching and she put it into action immediately. Brenda is faithful to training and she is serious about her nutrition. She eats like an adult! Because of her dedication and commitment to getting better she lost over 18 pounds during our S3 V.I.P challenge, she has lost over 30 pounds since joining the Get Fit NH family in late February, her pain has decreased significantly in her shoulders and knees and her overall movement patterns have improved tremendously. Brenda is an absolute pleasure to coach. I am proud of you for taking control of your future, Brenda! Here is what Brenda has to say:
My story began, as all of ours do, with my parents! But my decision to join Get Fit NH also began with my parents. Dad is 85 and Mom is 80….I am blessed to have them with me still; but advancing age has not come easily for them. I spent a good part of my fall and winter going to one doctor appointment after another, talking with doctors on the phone and managing medications. My parents live about 45 minutes away, so this made it even more challenging for me to balance their needs with those of my husband, our daughter and my two jobs…..notice I did not mention my own needs!
I used to be in relatively decent shape, but a series of injuries and surgeries put my activity levels on a back burner several years ago. Add to that some serious family health issues that occurred around the same time….suddenly I was not moving and putting on some pounds as I fed my stress with food. Eventually I stopped caring about any of those good health habits that I once had and pretty much gave up on myself.
It was the end of February when I had my “final straw” moment! That moment led me to pick up the phone and call GFNH. It suddenly cemented in my head that I wanted to age better than my parents have. The years pass so quickly and I want to go into my “golden years” feeling strong and fit. Perhaps, most importantly, I want my daughter to know that her mom took care of herself as best she could. I don’t want her time, or my time, to be spent at doctor’s appointments when I am in my 70‘s and 80’s and 90’s and even 100‘s! I want to be able to climb mountains with my husband again! I decided it was time to put myself back to the top of the list and to invest in me!
I met with Coach Meagan on February 24th and have not looked back! I love the motivation and accountability that I get from all the coaches….emails, phone calls, notes in the mail, encouragement while training…it all adds up. I told Coach Dean one day that GFNH is the only part of my life where I actually like to be told what to do! I need someone looking over my shoulder and helping me to believe in myself. I have never worked so hard at fitness…but I have also never felt stronger or more motivated to keep going.
I quickly learned that we all have to start our journeys somewhere, but that we don’t need to go it alone. From day one I have been coached and motivated by the staff and my classmates. I have learned that there is nothing I cannot do, but that I may need to modify it for my level. I have also learned that it’s “all about the food” and that what we put into our bodies is going to have a direct affect on what we get out of our bodies! Cooking and nutrition are a passion of mine, it’s been great learning about how to make the food I eat work for me!
Since joining GFNH I have lost weight and gained muscle. A scientist by training, I love the measurements and data showing my changing body composition; I find it motivating and actually look forward to getting on the scale each month! Get Fit NH is the perfect gym for me. I have chosen to invest in myself…and investment comes with a price. I have friends that choose the local $10 option and are amazed at what I pay; but I know that good health comes at a cost and I am worth it. If I don’t make the investment now, then I will be paying doctors later! I am determined to Make It Happen!!
Thank you for choosing to invest in yourself and train with Get Fit NH, Brenda! Keep making it happen!
Brenda is such a great example of what you can do with the right support, motivation, and coaching.
Shining A Spotlight And Sharing A Great Story!
One of the best parts of being a coach is watching clients have those “ah-ha” moments, when a lightbulb turns on and they find the will to make a change. Deb took that step 10 years ago and has not only reached her weight loss goal but is also controlling her cholesterol without medication for the first time in 25 years.
“I started at Get Fit 10 years ago because I had just moved to New Hampshire and was out of shape and gained a lot of weight,” Deb said. “My jeans were so tight they barely zipped. My eating was out of control.”
Before joining Get Fit NH I had been on cholesterol medication for 25 years. Two years ago I was taken off of Lipitor. Prior to joining Get Fit my eating was out of control and really did not hop on the band wagon seriously until 2018.”
Deb participated in several of our nutrition challenges and a year ago was able to maintain those habits as her new lifestyle. In the last year, Deb has lost 50 pounds. She said the benefits have been more than just fitting in to smaller jeans. She recently ran her fastest 5K, feels great, sleeps better and has a lot more energy.
“I am in the smallest size clothes in 25 years and feeling proud,.”
It’s been a pleasure to watch Deb transform her body physically, gain incredible strength and achieve goals that are only dreams to most women in their 50’s. But “can’t” is not in her vocabulary. That is why in her 50’s she has lost 50 pounds, run two marathons, countless half marathons, 10Ks and 5Ks. That is why she can deadlift her bodyweight, do push-ups, front planks and squats. Deb is an inspiration to women who continuously tell themselves they cannot do something. With the right mindset and support system, Rosenthal shows it’s possible to make other people’s dreams become your goals.
“If I can do it, you can too”
This Is One Strong Spotlight!
The spotlight shines on Robin today. I could write a novel about Robin, because that’s how awesome she is. One of the best parts of being a coach is not only watching someone physically change, but watching them change mentally and emotionally. Robin has changed in all of these ways. When I first met with Robin 7 months ago she was so nervous. It’s common to feel nervous and self-conscious about starting a new training plan and doing something you’ve never done before alongside people you’ve never met before. Talk about intimidating. Robin embraced it and dove in anyways. The Robin I know today is SO far from the Robin I met 7 months ago. Robin today is confident, she is strong, she is outgoing and funny and as you’ll learn in her remarks she is proud of herself
I knew that I was at the point in my life where just eating right wasn't enough. In the past I could just stop eating junk and cut out sugar and that, by itself, was enough to drop some pounds and I'd be happy with that. However, once I reached my 40's , I realized that wasn't enough and that I was starting to lose muscle at a rapid pace and that simple tasks were becoming more difficult. Walking up flights of stairs was becoming challenging (and working on the 3rd floor of city hall, the elevator was becoming a normal part of my trek and I felt guilty every time) and even getting up off the couch was becoming a challenge. As I was approaching 50, I knew I needed to change something. I saw the post on Facebook about a 28-day Metabolic Reboot and decided to give it a shot. I figured I could handle 4 weeks. Those 4 weeks went by in a flash and I knew, I KNEW, that I had to continue.
I've learned that I'm stronger than I give myself credit for and I can also tolerate more than I give myself credit for. And, most importantly (for me anyway), I CAN do an exercise program regularly and not die (although, sometimes it feels like I am going to...ha ha ha), that it can be part of my life and yet not RULE my life. I always thought only the "crazy fitness people" exercised regularly and I was certainly not one of "them". I have learned that I actually LIKE (*gasp*) to exercise. Still don't like to run...not sure anyone can ever make me like that. But I look forward to my 5:30 class and I NEVER dread going. In the past when I had signed up for another gym, I would always look for excuses why I couldn't go and would justify it with, "well, it's only $10 a month so it's not a big deal". And then after a while when I realized that all I was doing was adding to their profit margin and not getting any benefit out of it, I would cancel. That cycle continued on for years. Now THAT'S crazy.
One of the most important things I've learned - I love the coaches here! I remember when I was talking to Nancy on the phone the day I called to ask about what I had seen on Facebook and I was thinking "I don't want to be in a class with boys...I don't want them to see my failure." Sad, isn't it? That I hadn't even started yet and I was already thinking I was going to fail. That was my past experiences programming my brain to automatically think that. So Nancy registered me for the 8:30am "ladies only" class. I remember that I was nervous as heck thinking that all the coaches would be drill instructors (like Biggest Loser) screaming at people and humiliating them. After meeting with Meagan for the first time, I walked out of there thinking, "I like her and I don't think she'll yell at me". I got in my car feeling excited to start and thought to myself "I got this!" From day one, I have been very happy with the training and the people. I have never seen a more encouraging group of engaged coaches and I feel like I'm so lucky to have started my training there. I tell people all the time about it. When people see me leaving work with my gym bag and ask where I'm going - I'm sure they immediately regret it because I then go on a long-winded sales pitch for GetFit NH. When people say to me "you look great" - I take that opportunity to tell them about GetFit NH. I wish you guys had GetFit NH buttons, I would wear it proudly every day to promote you all!!!!!
Since I started my training almost 7 months ago, I have lost 15 pounds and 8.4 inches total. I'm still a far distance from my goal and I'm moving along at a turtle's pace, but I'm very happy with the progress I've made physically in those months.
Now the part you don't actually see. I am FEELING so much better. I can walk up all 5 flights of stairs at work and I don't save all my trips to only do once (like I used to do because I just was not comfortable moving my body), I find that I don't mind going up and down those stairs several times a day. I park farther away and don't mind walking. When I run errands, I don't mind getting in and out of the car several times.
The other part is how proud my family is of me and they tell me all the time how proud they are that I am taking measures to take care of myself. My husband said that he is not worried anymore that I won't be around to see our children get married and have children. He said that previously, he worried about that every day. How sad is that? I am forever grateful to all of you for giving me my life back and for helping me to see that I can succeed, however long that takes. I love you guys!!!! ; )
We are so proud of Robin. Thank you for sharing your story! Keep making it happen!
