The Secret about Recovery Weeks

Yeah I am talking to you sweet lips!

Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but here’s the super secret hush hush lowdown on what to do on recovery weeks…

Recover.

You earn your recovery weeks by busting your tail for 8 to 12 weeks of hard training.

Enjoy It.

Our next scheduled recovery week is August 27th through Labor Day. This is not random, haphazard or unnecessary. This is part of the training plan that we put together every year, and it is a vital part of our training program. Recovery weeks are the key to lower injury rates and increased progress. Don’t try to outsmart the system. I can give you the names of people who have unsuccessfully tried, and it’s just not worth it.

To many of you recovery weeks are a new concept, and that’s ok, because we want you to know why we do what we do. Invest a few minutes of your time to understand the “secrets” of recovery weeks and how they make you better.

Recovery Is Where The Magic Happens

I Hate Recovery Weeks

Rest, Recover and Regenerate, It’s Not Optional

Congratulations Get Fit NH (and Coach Nancy)

We won! We all won.

Get Fit NH was named First Place NH for Personal Trainer in Applaud Women’s Best in Beauty Contest. I was touched because we were nominated for this award. I wish I knew who to thank, so I’ll just say one big “Thank you.”

Applaud Women is a local online magazine that is dedicated to women in New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts. Its purpose is to inspire, inform, and applaud local women.

The core of the magazine is inspirational women’s articles, most of which feature local women but occasionally are with national women who provide a unique inspiration.

Other articles cover topics of interest such as: food recipes, home, garden, beauty, health, fashion, dating, parenting, seniors, finance, business, hair care, skin care, advice, real estate, insurance, weddings, etc.

Each issue has a feature section as well. Many articles are written by local business people who provide information relevant to their business expertise. The Applaud Women website is also a resource center for local women including the most comprehensive listings of Restaurants, Weddings, Female doctors and Hotels.

You can see the results by reading their online magazine here.

Thank you again for the nomination for this award. I applaud you.  (I just couldn’t let that pun go, I am truly thankful)

An Olympic Event – The Marathon Erg

The opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Games are tomorrow, and we don’t want these two weeks to pass us by without getting in on the action.

On Saturday August 11th at 7:30am we will be gathering at Get Fit NH Concord to stage an event so spectacular it will go down in legend.

We are looking to put together teams of 4 to do the grand daddy of all Ski Erg events – The Marathon Erg!

You read correctly – 42195 meters of pure pleasure – do you have the guts to get in on the action?

Here’s the plan:

Each athlete on the teams will row 2000 meters then pass off the baton to the next team member. Each team member will row 5 heats of 2000 and 1 heat of ~ 550.

Are You In?

Sign up on the board in your gym, and let’s Make It Happen!

Run Where NASCAR Drivers Race!

I thought it was pretty cool when Raechel of the 5:30pm Concord told me the 22nd Annual D.A.R.E. Classic 5K was being held at the NHMS, so when she asked me to pass the info on it was a no brainer.

And how about this?

They are even running it on a Wednesday so we can all go! 🙂

D.A.R.E. as it is known, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 percent of our nation’s school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world.

D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. (source http://www.dare.com)

As the parents of a police officer, Nancy and I are happy to help spread the word. Take a look at the course below – it’s pretty cool!

Professional Grade

Have you counted your blessings lately?

If you are anything like me you probably find you don’t do it nearly as much as you could, and should.

Sure, we all have challenges that we face on a daily basis, and it would be trite not recognize that fact.

But I dare say for most reading this note, if you really sit down and think about it, the blessings far outweigh the things that weigh us down if we let them.

Here’s one for you – If you trained with us on Tuesday aren’t you glad you could walk out of the gym?

Just sayin’…  🙂

Anyway today I was reflecting on how grateful I am for the coaches we have at Get Fit NH.

They are Professional Grade, as coaches and as people.

Like in many industries there is an ongoing debate in the fitness industry when it comes to building a team.

Do you hire for skill or for passion?

Do you hire the training genius with the personality of a brick or do you hire the people person who doesn’t know their IT band from their scapula?

I am grateful that is not a problem at Get Fit NH, because the coaching team here truly is second to none.

Each member of the team brings not only passion for helping people be the best they can be, but the skill to assess and evaluate how our clients are moving and what special attention might be needed to help them get just a little better that day.

There is a lot more to successfully training clients than getting up in front of a room and cheerleading or throwing together a mish-mash of exercises and calling it cross training.

I am grateful that our coaches get that, and that each one of them works hard to hone their craft and get better, day by day.

In the past few months:

Coach Erin earned her Functional Movement Screen credential, which has allowed her to further understand human movement and apply corrective techniques to her training arsenal. She has taken on the lead role in Athletic Revolution, and I look forward to seeing that program grow. Erin has been an integral part of Get Fit NH’s success in Concord with her enthusiasm, hard work, and willingness to go the extra mile.

Coach CJ had the opportunity to spend some time with Dr. Charlie Weingroff as he traveled to NY and studied how to bridge the gap between the rehabilitation and training landscapes. CJ’s work with Dr. Brett Coapland has been a real bonus and I am grateful to learn from both these pros and watch our clients benefit as well. CJ’s quiet demeanor belies a ferocious competitiveness and desire to excel.

Morgan Parker is recently graduated from Colby Sawyer with her degree in exercise science and has been a great addition as she interns with us this summer. I have greatly appreciated Morgan’s willingness to learn and never leaving without asking “Is there anything else you need me to do before I go?” I have enjoyed seeing Morgan’s skill (and loud voice) grow as the summer has progressed.

What can I say about Coach Nancy? She has not been named “Best of the Best” Fitness Instructor two years in a row for nothing. In the past year we have had the opportunity to travel to numerous seminars and events and it is not an overstatement to say she is one of the best in the business. Her ability to lead, motivate and inspire is equaled only be her knowledge of how the body works and how to coach to make yours work better. Nancy’s practical knowledge of how to bring healthy meals to the table in a crazy busy world has proven invaluable to our bootcamp families and our own. Me without Nancy is like the sky without the sun – not very bright!

I am also grateful for each client that has walked through our doors, past and present. Get Fit NH doesn’t exist without you, and that is never taken for granted. You inspire all of our your coaches to want to get better, to dig deeper, and continue to work hard to help you reach your goals.

Thank-you for choosing to train with us!

Coach Dean

A Fashion Show at Get Fit NH? You Could Be A Winner?

Contest Extended Until August 3rd – Get Those Pics In!

Did you see “A Bootcamp Story: The Tale of the T-Shirts? (Click the link if you haven’t)

A quick synopsis – Judy showed us her amazing transformation in pictures of her training wardrobe over the last 3 years.

Well Judy got us to thinking…(Dangerous I know, but in this case it could be very profitable, and fashionable!)

How many other Get Fit NH success stories are there out there willing to share their wardrobe updates?

So we decided to do the logical thing to get that question answered – bribe you.

Ok not really, but we are going to offer you a pretty cool prize if you are the winner of our latest contest – a gift certificate to put toward some new, well, whatever you want. Training clothes (can you say FoxFancePants?), footwear, a new dress maybe (what do you say, I think Shawn Claude is in now!)

Here’s how it’s going to work:

For every client that sends us a “Before and After” of an article of clothing before they started training with us and one they currently wear we are going to put $5 in the pool.

The Get Fit NH coaches will then go through each entry and choose the top 5.

Then it’s your turn to vote.

We will post the top 5 entries online and you will have the opportunity to choose which transformation you think is the most dramatic.

The top vote getter will then get a gift certificate for the total value of the prize pool toward some new duds.

How cool is that?

Be creative with your pics, you never know what is going to make the difference.

The contest will run from today through the 27th of July.

Contest Extended Until August 3rd – Get Those Pics In!

Send your entries to getfitnh(at)gmail.com today!

PS – Thank you Judy for inspiring this contest.  In order to keep Judy stylin’ in Get Fit NH garb, she’ll have her choice of a clothing item in stock. Can’t wait to see what she picks out!

Sizzlin’ Summer Slimdown Awards – Concord Edition

Hey guys, just wanted to share a few shots of our first and second place individual winners in our 3rd annual “Sizzlin’ Summer Slimdown” transformation contest as they were awarded their prizes.

The “Epsom Awards” will be coming soon, as Katie receives her prizes and the crazy 6:15 gets their shirt designed for winning the team competition.

In the meantime:

First place winner Susan Perry knocked out the competition with a total of 23 pounds (15.02%) lost over the 8 weeks. Sue has promised to share some thoughts about the past 8 weeks and how the “4 Habits” made such a big difference in the way she looks and feels.

For winning Sue got a gift certificate from our friends over at Chichester Massage, 12 months membership to our F.L.A.G. program, a custom “Get Fit NH” jacket, and a new iPad!

Frank Muller, our 2nd place winner with 27 pounds (12.41%) lost was throwing around some golf terminology this morning (net low vs. gross), but the fact of the matter is Frank is literally a changed man. The way he embraced the habits and kept strong throughout the contest was fantastic to witness.

Frank also received a gift certificate from Chichester Massage, 6 month of F.L.A.G., and his own custom Get Fit NH pullover.

Congratulations and well done Frank and Sue!

We Are On Fire – For A Great Cause!

On Saturday July 21st, during Market Square days, team “Get Fit & Don’t Quit” will participate in the Concord Public Safety Foundation’s (CPSF) Inaugural Fire Truck Pull.

This event is for a great cause, as the CPSF is raising funds for a LUCAS hands free CPR device for Concord Fire, and also seed money for a future Concord Police K-9 program.

Get Fit NH is putting up the entry fee of $400, so it doesn’t have to cost you a thing, although you are free to donate to the fund as you see fit.

Here’s the scoop: We need 10 “pullers” and 2 alternates to get this big red monster rolling down Main St. We need a minimum of 3 ladies on the team, so here’s your chance to show the boys how it’s done.

We are fortunate to have Kim Sawyer of 5:30pm Concord leading the charge, as she just participated in a fundraiser for the Wounded Warriors Fund to pull a Boeing 757 airplane – I should think the fire truck should be easy. 🙂

So here is your chance to volunteer before I PUT you on the team. Please let your coach know you want in, send us an email, or click here to use the contact form.

So come on out and support the first responders in your community – you know you want to!

For more info on this great event click here…
