Take Charge of Your Heart with Dr. Madalyn Otto

Love is the language we all want to speak in February. Some of us do it better than others. But here is my shot to make all the puns about love and hearts since On February 17th, Dr. Otto will bring her passion of helping our hearts gain health and stay that way. What better time is there to talk about heart health than in February when we are in the mood for love. This workshop is open to anyone who has stole a pizza of your heart, your significant otter, or when words can not espresso how much they mean to you. But if you like them a latte you should ask them to join you. At Get Fit NH our goal is that our clients achieve their best health – that’s no big mystery. But sometimes there is something going on inside of us that makes achieving optimal health more challenging.

And that’s where Dr. Detectives like Dr. Madalyn Otto from Whole Health Concord come in. Health is her passion as well. Solving medical mysteries and giving people the tools they need to reach their ultimate potential is an exciting and rewarding experience that she feels privileged to have on a daily basis. Let Dr. Otto tell you her story.

Dr. Madal

“I studied natural medicine because I was intrigued with the expertise and resilience of the body and realized that there is a tendency in the medical community to underestimate both this expertise as well as the power of “nature-made” solutions. I use a multi-dimensional, integrative approach with my patients to achieve long-lasting effects. My goal is to exceed your health need – help you feel younger, more energetic, pain-free and motivated so you can do all the things that you do best!

I am originally from upstate New York (Automatic Bills’ fan by geography…) and earned my undergraduate degree from University at Buffalo. I earned my naturopathic medical degree at SCNM in Arizona and completed a naturopathic family medicine residency thereafter. A rain-and-snow lover at heart, I recently decided to uproot my East Valley practice to transfer to this beautiful state and join Whole Health Concord.”

Chances are, you either personally suffer from or love someone who suffers from a form of heart disease – high blood pressure, high cholesterol, plaque build-up in the arteries, heart attack,and/or stroke. Heart disease is incredibly common in the US, and the numbers continue to rise. What is your cardiac risk, and what can you do about it?

The problem:
1) The standard tests physicians use to assess cardiac risk are out-dated. Newer, comprehensive, insurance-covered tests provide brilliant insight into what’s really going on with your biochemistry and how it’s affecting your risk for heart attack. This is usually a complex interplay between genetics, lifestyle and biochemistry. With these in-depth analyses, Whole Health can accurately assess your true risk factors and see real progress with treatment.

2) The standard medical treatment used is uni-dimensional and largely palliative. When the body’s biochemistry is “off”, it’s because it’s adjusting to an internal problem. High blood pressure and high cholesterol didn’t happen by chance – They are a consequence of an underlying imbalance that needs to be corrected!

Dr. Otto wants to share with you the 4-1-1 about heart health. What’s really going on in your arteries? And what steps can you make to take charge of your heart and keep it happy and healthy? What can you do now to take charge of your heart? Of course we want you to share your love and this information with your Loved Ones, bring them along for a date. “Wood you go with me” and “Stick with me” are both pick up lines I highly recommend using this Valentines Day. If that doesn’t work let them know you Wheely like them and that you are fondue them too. But seriously Ewe are one in a million and I’ve taken a Viking to you so we want you to be your best.

Mark your calendars now – this seminar is sure to be packed. And Yes, I will be there sharing more punny words of wisdom.

Take Charge of Your Heart!

21 Day Jumpstart Challenge: February Edition

“When you can make lemonade from life’s lemons, your glass will always be full.” Coach Nancy

(I’m not sure if I was the first one to say that but boy is it true)

Life always throws us curveballs. We are not in control of so many things that each day we have to adjust and make new plans. In the long run, most of these are just small irritations. But these small irritations can have a big affect on our waistline!

You have heard us say it before – all of us are emotional eaters on some level. We eat when we are happy, we eat when we are sad, we eat to be social, we eat when we feel like being anti-social.cover-785x1024.jpg

On the purely foundational level, we need to eat to survive – to keep the biochemical reactions in our bodies functioning at a high level.

And for the next 21 days, starting on February 15th, we will be eating to Jumpstart our bodies back into health.

If you have never done one of our 21-Day Jumpstart Detoxes before, you are in for a treat. Here is what some of our past participants have had to say when we asked the question “What did you learn from the 21-Day Jumpstart Detox?”:

“If I fuel my body with healthy food, it’s so much happier with me than if I feed it junk! Amazing how simple it is!” – Paulette

“That I really don’t need or miss sugar!” – Mary

That there is tremendous strength and endless possibility in a group effort!” – Mae Lynn

“Don’t accept that quality food isn’t worth the time; that waking up w/occasional achiness is part of aging; asthma-type congestion is only resolved w/medication; Sugar or coffee are necessary afternoon pick-me-ups; that getting everything done requires more hours (as opposed to more natural energy)….” – Rayne

“I have learned that eating well is easier than I thought! I definitely can eat this way forever! I am stronger than I thought” – Debbie

And those are just a few things that Detox participants have shared with us!

Here’s what you get when you sign up for the 21-Day Jumpstart Detox Challenge:

  • Jumpstart Detox Meal Plan That Eliminates All The Guesswork
Discover the right way to detox

The Spotlight is on Sara and She is Shining Bright

In each training session, there are those who take charge of their crew and lead with a loud voice, others lead using charisma and charm, still others lead with their actions. Sara is a leader who shows you her determination and strength through what she does. It is a true joy to have Sara train with us at Get Fit NH. Because of her schedule she makes her training a priority but that also allows so many of us in Epsom to know her. She has hit every training time. Enough from me, Sara has kindly written down her story.

Sarah w

“I’ve always considered myself to be an athlete, and feel best when I’m moving. I played all kinds of sports growing up, was a rower in college, and love being outside and hiking in the mountains. Up until my first son was born, being active and strong was a routine part of my life. I have two little boys who are 5 and 3, and about two years ago, once my youngest turned 2, it was harder and harder to honestly look in the mirror and see myself as the active, strong person I knew I wanted to be. I started to look around at gyms in the area, I knew that I wanted to go someplace where I’d be held accountable, and could rely on somebody besides myself to get back in shape. As a wife and mom and professor, looking back, I think what I was really looking for was an hour of time where I didn’t have to think or be in charge or make decisions—I could just show up and do what I was told. I looked at my time as a break from the rest of my life—a little bit of time when I could take care of only me. And from the beginning, I loved it. And was reminded of what had been missing from my life for the past few years. And the longer I’ve been with Get Fit, the more tools I’ve been given to keep feeling better and better.

I first started working out at the Concord gym, and for the first six weeks went 4 times a week. I mentioned that I loved the training from the beginning, which is true…but I spent much of the first month with lots of sore muscles! Within a short amount of time, though, I could feel myself getting stronger, and especially once I started to listen to the nutritional part of the training at Get Fit, I could see big changes in what my body looked and felt like. It’s hard to say what’s most important to me about being a part of Get Fit. I am constantly inspired by the coaches, and have trained next to many amazing people. While I see the training as a fun challenge, and look forward to walking in, looking at the board to see what I’ll get to do that day, I think the part that has had a bigger influence on my life is the way in which we’re encouraged to think about nutrition. In the last year, because of detoxes and the summer challenges, I’ve made significant changes to how I eat, and more importantly, how I think about food. Get Fit has reminded me that food is fuel. Do I still love ice cream? Definitely. Do I always drink enough water? No. But do I know what I can do to in order to feel like my body is working optimally? Yep, and most importantly, I have learned to be more in tune to what I need nutritionally, and the steps I can take to get it to that point. I think this combination of being pushed in training to go a little bit harder, longer, heavier, smarter…plus the nutritional knowledge that is constantly shared with us, has made me feel better than I have in years. Over the past year, I’ve run my first half-marathon, finished hiking all of the 4000-footers with my husband, and had to go out and buy a smaller sized wardrobe!

birthday fun

For the past 18 months, I’ve trained twice a week at Epsom, and though there are weeks when I struggle to make it to training as much as I’d like, I can’t imagine life without Get Fit. There are times I fight to balance work and family and training…some months I’m more successful than others at juggling my responsibilities at work and at home. Some weeks I don’t always make it to training as much as I would like—or at all. And there are times when I know I’ll be getting an email from Nancy wondering

where I’ve been! I still struggle to balance all of the pulls on my time and to recognize that it’s okay to take that few hours a week for myself. But thanks to Get Fit, I’m sold on the idea that when I give myself this time, I am a better wife, mother, teacher, and person.”

On top of all this Sara and I share the same birthday. How cool is that? 🙂

Enjoy (and Survive) The Season: 21 Day Holiday Challenge

thanksgivingI was amazed at hearing Christmas songs before we even survived Halloween. But it is true, the busy holiday season is here. Did you know that some studies show that every year between Halloween and New Years the average American gains 5-12 pounds? Wouldn’t it be nice this year to not be average? Wouldn’t it be nice to stop the overeating but still enjoy the get together and family events?

Get Fit NH’s Jumpstart Detox can help do that for your body. The Jumpstart Detox will take out some foods from your plate, BUT you will replace those with others which will leave your body feeling happy, not over stuffed, bloated and agitated.

This is our last challenge of the year and you know you don’t want to miss it, so how do you get on board?

The best way is to join us at Get Fit NH’s Jumpstart Nutrition Seminar on November 21 at Get Fit NH Concord. This seminar will also include a “mini-detox workshop” which will cover all the basics you need to know. But don’t worry if you can’t make it, you will still get everything you need sent to you when you register (click here)!

If you have never done one of our 21-Day Detoxes before, you may be wondering what exactly it is all about. You don’t just have to take our word for it, here is what some of our past participants have had to say when we asked the question:

Sandy Stands Tall in the Spotlight

sandySandy and I go back, way back. When she became part of the our Get Fit NH family I have seen so much more of Sandy and I wanted to have her share her story. She is one of the quieter students, but one that works hard each session. She puts her entire attention into the training. She wanted to not just come ‘workout’ but to change her entire well being. I am so proud of Sandy. Once you’ve trained with Sandy, you’ll see that persistence that I see each day.

Why did you choose Get Fit NH?

“I have known Dean and Nancy for a long time…since before Get Fit NH existed. My daughter was one of the early clients. I thought about joining, but wasn’t sure I could commit the time or that I could actually participate because of back and shoulder injuries. “

What did you notice that changed first?

“In August I decided to talk to Nancy about my concerns. She has been amazing at working with my limitations and helping me to overcome them. I have no more back pain, greatly increased flexibility and balance, better posture, strength and endurance. I have also begun to lose weight. “

What is your favorite part of Get Fit NH?

“Nancy has been very flexible with my constantly shifting schedule. Everyone has been encouraging and helpful. The atmosphere at Get Fit NH is positive and confidence building. I am glad I finally got started.”

Quiet determined persistence. I’m so glad Sandy took that first step into Get Fit NH.

Are Your Hormones Holding You Back?

“The first time I met Dr. Jones, I was immediately drawn to her easy to listen style of teaching. She made technical medical lingo simple to understand. I learn something each time I hear her talk. Now working with Dr. Jones on several different occasions I appreciate her even more. Beyond making our bodies easier to understand she gives practical tips to help ourselves. She also offers a more intense look into how your body operates to get it to run even better at her practice in Concord. This seminar is the first step to making you an even better you. Dr. Jones is a naturopathic doctor at Whole Health in Concord.”

Concord – Get Fit NH

What’s in Your Nutrition?

Whole 9Get Fit NH has teamed up with Whole9, specialists in the field of nutrition and a respected authority in the health and fitness community, to provide our clients with a comprehensive nutritional program designed to make you the healthiest you’ve ever been. Why are we focusing so much on what you eat? Because we believe nutrition is the foundation of any good fitness program, and the gateway to optimal health. And we think your nutritional habits play such an important role in achieving your health and performance goals that we’ve asked Whole9 to design this nutrition program for our clients.

Eat Real Food.

Our belief is that a good nutritional program should be centered around eating real food. We know that fad diets, crash diets, miracle pills and “meal replacements” are not part of a balanced, sustainable path towards improved health and fitness. Instead, we encourage you to eat high quality meat, seafood and eggs, plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, and healthy sources of dietary fats – it’s that simple. Just eat good food, put your meals together in a way that is simple, balanced and (most importantly) sustainable, and experience all of the tangible benefits that come from a nutritional plan designed to help you create a healthy metabolism, heal your digestive tract, calm systemic inflammation and put an end to unhealthy cravings, habits, and relationships with food.

The Whole9 Nutrition Program

We believe implementing good nutritional habits from the very start is so important that we provide all of our clients with a comprehensive printed handbook designed to walk you through Whole9’s nutrition program. Your handbook includes all the tools you’ll need to succeed, including:

  • Our nutritional “elevator pitch” – Nutrition in 60 Seconds
  • list of food groups that detract from your health and fitness, and those groups that make you healthier
  • A detailed Shopping Guide, including helpful hints for making high quality food choices
  • The Whole9 meal planning template, outlining portion sizes, meal frequency and pre- and post-workout nutrition
  • Delicious, Whole30-approved recipes that follow our meal planning template, and a 7-day meal plan
  • A multi-category FAQ to help you hit the ground running
  • A number of helpful resources – additional recipe sites, references, books and movies
  • The Whole30, Whole9’s original program designed to “change your life in 30 days”
  • The Whole30 FAQ, to help guide you through your 30 day program

Place: Get Fit NH Epsom

And the Answer Is……

maelynnWhen you walk into a gym you usually don’t think, “How is this place going to help me to eat better?” Get Fit NH strives to help you with just that. The first time I talked with Mae Lynn, she wanted to know how Get Fit NH could help her with running. Once she started and now over three years later, Mae Lynn gives us a little insight into more of the things Get Fit NH has helped her to change.

I asked Mae Lynn one question after our Sizzlin Summer Slimdown Challenge ended.

What do you find was the easiest new habit to change and which one was the hardest?

“Easiest? I found changing my cooking and shopping habits to be very, very easy. It simplifies the shopping process so much when you don’t have complicated recipes and long lists of ingredients to deal with. I go in, grab eggs, bacon, one or two big cuts of meat and 5 or six fresh veggies and fruits and that’s it. Maybe a package of salad and grape tomatoes. I always keep cans of olives and roasted peppers and artichokes in the pantry, and frozen peppers and onions in the freezer. It’s easy to stick with shopping this way when you find you are eating leftovers a lot and therefore cooking less! One big roasted chicken or a pot roast and two big pans of roasted veggies? Boom. Several meals.

Hardest? At first, probably the no added sugar beverages. I never drink soda anymore, I gave that up cold turkey years ago before I even did Weight Watchers. But when I gave up soda, I would still enjoy sweetened iced tea or lemonade especially in the summer. Now I have lemon water, unsweetened green tea, etc. I think people don’t realize real change takes time and often needs to be gradual. I quit soda in something like 2009, did the other sweetened stuff for a few years, and eventually got here.

I think that once you have the basic habits ingrained, having some treats once and awhile isn’t the end of the world.

Once and awhile I still have a sweetened iced tea and I almost always have chocolate milk after a long run. But it’s all about balance, and I feel okay with that as long as what I USUALLY do is a good habit. I have to remind myself it wasn’t always this way! I used to have soda or a sweetened beverage with every meal! Those things add up. When people ask me what they can do I always say change that one thing first. Now I always have water with my meals, and drink a lot of water during the day. If I do ever have a sweetened iced tea I’ll water it down, or ask for half sweet half unsweetened on the rare occasion I’m getting one at Dunks. A little sugar goes a long way for me now.

By the way, I love the new accountability idea. One comment I made on Facebook is that I will probably end up asking for more body fat assessments because my scale really hasn’t moved all that dramatically since I started with you guys, but I have gone from a size 12 to a size 4. Every summer, without exception, I have to buy new summer clothes. The lady at Eddie Bauer couldn’t believe it when I told her I lose weight over the winter.”

Keep on surprising all of us Mae Lynn!

How would you answer that question?

What do you find was the easiest new habit to change and which one was the hardest?

Another noteworthy piece Mae Lynn added was,

“For as long as I can recall, my cholesterol has been high, and every health professional who ever had the opportunity has ‘strongly urged’ me to get on Lipitor. One stress test technician, after I ran the equivalent of Heartbreak Hill on the treadmill and passed with flying colors, was still downright nasty to me when I told her I intended to continue trying to handle it with diet and exercise and that I simply didn’t agree that statin drugs, designed to indiscriminately remove all fat from the blood, are a good thing for anyone. She said I was being irresponsible and that ‘some people are genetically predisposed to high cholesterol.’ Given that many relatives were on Lipitor, I might have had to concede that point.

So this past week, after three years of training at Get Fit NH and not a lot of change in my blood results and absolutely no change in my feelings about drug therapy,  I was beginning to run out of things to say to the doctors, and I was dreading my yearly physical and ‘the talking to’ from my doctor. Imagine my genuine surprise when the nurse presented me with results she said needed ‘to be bronzed!’
My good cholesterol, or HDL, target level more than 39, once 40, is now 61! My triglycerides, which many consider one of the better indicators of heart health, target level less than 150, previously topping out at 256 pre-GFNH, are now 82! As long as I’m throwing numbers around, my weight has not changed dramatically, but my clothing size? I’ve gone from a size 12 to a size 4.
I am so happy to finally see these results, and I wanted to share them because It demonstrates that real change takes time and consistent effort. I’ve been running since 2011 and training hard twice a week at Get Fit since 2012. In February 2014 and again this past year I did the Detox challenge and have been following the Whole 9 habits consistently. It took that long for me. Imagine if I had decided two years of hard work was enough, I was never going to see results, and thrown in the towel?
What kept me going, besides my addiction to running and desire to get better, stronger and faster? You guessed it. Being a part of the Get Fit NH community! As my training buddy Mark put it on Facebook, ‘I ask you, who wouldn’t want to be a part of the Get Fit family?”
We could not be more proud of Mae Lynn for following through and earning great result! You can make it happen too!

The Get Fit NH Summer Challenge is On!

Our July challenge has begun!

The best part is as the winner of this challenge you decide if you are Tropical, Bananas or Just (plain) Nuts.

Training is important. We all know that. Get Fit NH wants to reward you for doing something we all know is important consistently. Every week you have perfect attendance in July your name will go in a prize jar. The more you’re consistent, the more chances you have to win. At the end of July there will be a name drawn in Concord and another name in Epsom. The winner will choose their prize.

What are the prizes? Shhhhhh……. It’s a secret. I love secrets. Here’s a hint. One prize has something to do with coconuts, actually the whole prize has to do with coconuts. Another prize has everything to do with nuts and you’ve got it the third prize is a little of everything.

It’s the Summer of Fun at Get Fit NH, so get on in here!
