If you died right now, how would you feel about your life?

I came across a buzzfeed link the other day that had quotes about life taken from the movie Fight Club, which is one of my favorite movies, if not my favorite. This was one of the quotes they talked about.

It’s a morbid question, I fully realize and understand that, but it certainly is a way to get us to stop and think about our path, and our past, present, and future. It is something that we can really use to reflect. There is a reason death leads people to change. There’s a reason why when a family member passes away or someone has a near death experience, often people suddenly change. Being reminded that life isn’t forever and the time we have is important often, unfortunately, is a message only heard after life ends.

You don’t need to think about yourself dying, how heartbroken others around you would be and the like. It’s just an exercise in self-reflection. If for some reason this was the end of the line for you, would you feel you accomplished everything you wanted to? Would you be upset that you worried to much about work? That you didn’t take care of yourself? That you kept pushing off getting healthier? Or that you didn’t take that trip you always wanted to go on? Maybe you let work bog you down, working insane hours to save money for things that we just end up not doing because of work, rinse and repeat.

Time isn’t promised to any of us. That’s why it is important to take care of yourself to make it last as long as possible. We take care of our bodies so that we are able to do everything we want to do and aren’t restricted because we can’t walk. We take care of our minds, continue to read, and express and absorb. We de-stress, and make time for the things that make us happy. We don’t keep putting our lives on hold because we are just “too busy”.

So, I ask you to think about this question, reflect, and see what you discover.

Sam is in the Athlete Academy Spotlight!

The spotlight is shining on another of my Athlete Academy kids, Sam. Sam has been a member of our Athlete Academy for a while now. Not only has he set personal best times in cross country, but he recently won a coach’s award for cross country over the fall session.

Sam is pictured on the left.

Sam’s mom, Lori (who is also part of the Get Fit Family!), described the award: “The Coaches Award is given to the athlete(s) that show leadership, good work ethic, and being a team player both on and off the field”.

Sam and his brother have been a part of Athlete Academy for a while now, and watching them continue to grow (quite literally in Sam’s case) and progress has been awesome. The award Sam has eared is an important one because it shows how well-rounded the athlete is in all facets of the game, both on and off the field. Great job Sam and keep up the great work!

Introducing Kristen Chulada!

I am excited to introduce you to our newest Physical Preparation and Nutrition Coach, Kristen Chulada. We are looking forward to having Kristen help us grow our nutrition coaching services as well as be on the floor making you sweat. She will be working in both locations, so plan on meeting her soon. Please read about Kristen in her own words - Coach Dean

I knew at a young age that I wanted to enter the health and wellness field. Growing up with a mother as a Registered Dietitian and a father as an Athletic Trainer and health teacher was extremely influential.

As a little girl, I loved watching my mom teach about how food could make a person feel better and tagging along with my dad on his various sporting endeavors. This all translated into a serious love for food and sports; specifically fueling the body with nutritious and enjoyable foods while finding the exercise style that keeps you motivated and challenged.

Having battled with an eating disorder in high school, I know what it’s like to feel lost and confused about eating healthy and what it right for your body. However, after making a full recovery and learning as much as possible about proper nutrition, my ultimate goal is to help you build a healthy relationship with food and learn which foods make you feel your absolute best. I do not believe in diets and will never enforce them; what I do is individualize nutrition guidelines to help you achieve your goals.

I am also deeply passionate about physical activity, and know that nutrition is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to overall health. I grew up as a three-season athlete, and as I entered adulthood I became more interested in individual fitness and strength training. This drove my desire to pair my love for teaching nutrition with physical fitness coaching.

I am excited to be a part of the Get Fit NH team and to help you make it happen!

Kristen Chulada is a Registered Dietitian and licensed in the state of New Hampshire. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition and completed her Dietetic Internship through the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is also a Certified Personal Trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine.

3 Way to Improve

Strength training has endless benefits to your overall health and quality of life. One of the most appealing benefits that I think we can all agree on is that it helps us keep our independence. Strength training keeps us out of a walker for longer. It keeps us getting up and down off of the floor and gives us the energy to keep up with all those grandbabies! If that isn’t enough motivation to keep you training for life, then let’s chat about what does motivate you!

Here are 3 ways to advance your training to the next level:

1. Be Engaged

Coming in and going through the motions each day does not require a whole lot of effort. I assume if you’re here it is because you want to change something about yourself and get better. So what do I mean by be engaged? Pay attention to how much weight you are picking up. Pay attention to speed of movement. Count your reps. Be coachable. Ask questions and challenge yourself. If you want to see your body change, then you have to make it change.

2. Be Coachable

Again, assuming if you are here, then you want to be coached (that’s why you hired us, right?). So let us do that. If we push you to sink lower in your squat- don’t roll your eyes like we’re bullies! We’re coaches and we know if you’re getting in here then you want to make a change and we are responsible for holding you to that. Embrace the coaching- that’s what makes Get Fit NH different from any other gym in the area.

3. Be Smart

Did you know that you are a part of a SMART group training program? What makes us smart? The Functional Movement Screen. This is again one of the many things that makes Get Fit NH different than any other training program around. Look at the Functional Movement Screen as a measuring point. It gives you another way to measure improvement and be sure that you stay in the training game. I know some of you look at the bands as a punishment, but I promise they are what keeps us training you safe. Your coaches have bands too and there are exercises that are simply not appropriate for us too.

Keep making it happen,
Coach Meagan

You Belong At The Holiday Survival Seminar

Halloween just passed, Thanksgiving is around the corner, and then Christmas with all its festivities begins. It doesn't end there because New Years tops it all off like the cherry on top of a sundae. We don't have to give up all hopes of any semblance of nutrition for the next 8 weeks. I for one do not want to give in to the average weight gain of 4-8 pounds in those 8 weeks. It just fuels the same New Year's Resolution of losing weight most of us make come January.

The "Holiday Survival Seminar" will get you started in the right direction. At this seminar you will be given a Jumpstart manual full of information on what to eat, how much to eat, meal planning, grocery shopping, measuring yourself and your food, and much much more.

In addition to the our Jumpstart Manual, we'll fill you in on steps you can take to better your health through nutrition. This is not a diet but nutrition at its finest. Eating our way through the holiday season successfully. If you want to Stop dieting and Enjoy eating, we'll talk about how working with a coach might be just what you need. I've helped many get off the cycle of dieting and start enjoying food while still reaching their health goals.

The Grateful Plate website is booming. This is my family's favorite way to make deviled eggs. I think its because they taste great, but my girls are also very good at making them look so cute.

Shining the Lights On Elizabeth!

DId you ever meet someone and just know they had this drive, a determination, a hard working attitude that doesn't quit? That is Elizabeth. I'm so proud of her. She's been training with the 5am crew since the beginning of the summer. She is knocking it out of the park to Make It Happen.

"I had to make a change in my work out routine, so I stepped into the doors at Get Fit New Hampshire. I sat down with Coach Nancy and we talked about my fitness goals. I told her I needed to lose some body fat and be the best I can physically be in the Army. The first few days were extremely challenging waking up extra early and trying to look alive in front of my new work out buddies! By the time the second week rolled around I couldn’t wait to go to my next class even though I couldn’t walk! Seven months into this program I can run three miles without even thinking about walking, my glutes and quads are a lot more toned then when I began which has always been a struggle for me.

Coach is always there for me on a personal level or a physical level. Nancy is always putting heavier weights in front of me telling me to lift it! Sometimes I don’t think I have that ability then I try it, what’s there to loose besides a little weight? Once I give it a shot and am able to lift it, I get this since of pride that I can accomplish anything the world throws at me.

I love Get Fit I'm always after my friends and family to at least try it with me. They'll customize your work out. There are always extra challenges you can do too. I tried the 21 day detox and now when I eat I’m constantly asking myself where did this come from? Do I have enough protein? Eat more veggies! Anyone who wants a great family to hang out with or a challenge, Get Fit is right for you!"

Elizabeth surprised herself and me by shaving a minute off her run time and increasing all her other scores in her latest PT test. I'm proud of Elizabeth for serving us and our country.

Attitude is a Choice!

The other day I really got to thinking about how people respond when asked, How are you?.

This is kind of a question we ask out of proper etiquette, but do you really listen to the response you get? I’m good, I’m well, I’m alright, I’m okay and I’m here are all pretty common answers. It’s pretty rare that someone answers totally honest that they are having the worst day or the best day or a great day, right? They just kinda answer and move about their business.

Here is something I observed recently (because I really do listen when I ask you how you are doing!): I get A LOT of I’m okay and alright or I’m here (consistently and from the same people!).

I am no longer taking that as an answer so you may need to think about an adjustment.

You CAN’T just be Eeyore all the time! If you answer that way, then that’s how you’ll act. Do you REALLY just want to be okay all the time?

When someone asks me how I am doing, I always (and will always) say excellent, stupendous, super, amazing, wonderful, ducky….something insanely positive because that’s how I want to feel and act.

I strongly believe attitude is a choice and it starts with how you think you’re doing. Your attitude effects SO many aspects of life. It effects everyone around you. It effects your motivation, your actions, your results….everything.

Words mean something and they effect you so don’t be an Eeyore, be a Baby Roo!!!

We all love Jayne, don’t we?

I just had to put Jayne Millerick in the spotlight. If you train with Get fit NH then you have probably met Jayne, seen Jayne or heard of Jayne. She is insanely humble and more of an inspiration than she will ever understand. I remember when I first started coaching with Get Fit 4 years ago and thinking WOW! This woman is STRONG and she is the sweetest person ever. I feel so lucky to know Jayne, coach her and have her in this Get Fit NH family. When I grow up- I want to be like her and if you have ever trained next to her then you probably feel the same! I asked her to share her background, because even I would never believe her training history. Here is what she has to say..

How long have you trained at Get Fit NH?13962613_10154471913388410_4688648274892979837_n
6 years

Why did you seek out a coaching facility?
Before joining Get Fit, I was an expert at finding excuses not to exercise regularly. Something would inevitably come up every day and it wouldn’t get done. When a friend asked me to join her for the 5am class in Concord, I did it because coming up with a conflict at 5am was hard, even for me. 🙂

Why have you stayed for 6 years?
There are many, many reasons why I have stayed for 6 years. First and foremost, I love the people and the training program. Importantly though, there is peace of mind in knowing that you guys are always on top of what is best in nutrition and training. Following your guidance takes the time and guesswork out of both areas, which is huge for me.

What did you do for training before Get Fit?
Prior to training at Get Fit, I ran short distances a few times a week. As mentioned earlier though, I was very good at coming up with excuses not to train.

What has helped you be successful over the past 6 years?
Still a work in progress, but two things come to mind. First, its the coaches and fellow “Get Fitters”. You all make training a fun and positive experience every day. Second, its the nutrition. Following Get Fit’s nutrition guidance has not only significantly changed my body composition over the years but has eliminated daily mid-afternoon exhaustion.

What advice would you like to give someone who is just starting their journey?
Something that I have learned to do over the years is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Early on, I spent way too much time being afraid to fail. I used to think that showing up for class was important, not necessarily how hard I worked. I would watch people do pull ups and be too intimidated to even get up on the bar. Not unsurprisingly, I wasn’t getting the results I wanted. So, my advice to those starting out would be don’t waste time like I did! Listen for a challenge(s) at the start of each class, then do something that is hard even when you don’t want to and/or don’t feel ready. You may not always be successful and it may not be pretty, but I found the results I wanted followed once I started giving 100% for 60 minutes.

Take her advice. She is a perfect example of someone who MADE their body change. It doesn’t just happen (wouldn’t it be nice if it did?), you have to make it happen!
